The Forges & Manor of Ringwood was originally inhabited by Native Americans. The first European who purchased the land was Cornelius Board. He sold it shortly thereafter to Odgen, who sold to Hasenclever's company. After financial mismanagement, Hasenclever was replaced by Robert Erskine, who managed it until his premature death. Then it was sold to Martin J. Ryerson. Ryerson eventually sold it to the Cooper-Hewitt company, and it was occupied by the Cooper-Hewitts throughout the Victorian and Edwardian eras. Since then it has been the property of the State of New Jersey, which is to say that it belongs to all of us.
