Iron Mines at Ringwood Manor

The Iron Industry was central to Ringwood Manor. The manor was founded because of the rich ore in the area and one ironworks was located directly upstream in the Ringwood River. The industry expanded throughout Northern New Jersey. The town of Hewitt, now a National Historical Landmark District called Long Pond Ironworks, was also built around the industry and was intimately connected with life at Ringwood Manor. Although most of the mines have been accounted for in recent archaeological literature, sometimes we find new ones. In 2002, Martin Deeks discovered this right behind Ringwood Manor:
